Problem-Oriented Media: An Analysis of Economic News in the Context of Solutions Journalism
Abstract
The media informs individuals about developments throughout the historical process and tries to serve society's right to receive news. However, the news framework that the media often draws through problems is criticized, and there is a suggestion that the news should also include solutions. Solution journalism, which emerged from this point of view, covers an understanding of journalism that includes solution proposals as well as expressing the problems experienced by the society. This study examines the economic news in the Turkish media from the perspective of solution journalism and analyzes how the economic problems are framed through quantitative and qualitative content analysis. When the perspectives on economic problems of the five printed newspapers (Hürriyet, Milliyet, Sözcü, Sabah, Cumhuriyet) whose websites are the most clicked on are evaluated, it is not possible to talk about a qualified and sufficient solution journalism. The fact that newspapers cover economic problems from a political perspective is seen as the biggest obstacle to solution journalism. In addition, the findings of the research show that newspapers do not behave with the consciousness and awareness of solution journalism even in news items that offer solutions.
