The Effect of Adolescents' Compatibility with Their Parents on Their Career Anxieties
Abstract
Parents’ guidance and support are very important during the career process. In this study; The Parental guidance and support are very important in the career process. In this study, the effect of adolescents’ harmony with their parents on their career anxiety was examined. In this study, the effects of perceived family support and parental adjustment on career concerns of young individuals on career choice were examined and it was tried to reveal to what extent the family influences the career concerns of adolescents. Relational survey model was applied in the study. The study group was 185 adolescents consisting of high school students. Demographic Information Form, Adolescent-Parent Career Congruence Scale and Career Anxiety Scale were used to obtain the data. One-way ANOVA test was applied to compare more than two independent groups. Regression analysis was used to evaluate the prediction of dependent and independent variables and Pearson correlation analysis was used to determine the relationship between career anxiety and adolescent-parent harmony. According to the results obtained; the Career Anxiety Scale arithmetic averages of 14-year-old adolescents are lower than the averages of 15-year-old and older adolescents. According to the gender variable, the mean scores of adolescent-parent career adaptation did not show a significant difference, while the mean scores of female adolescents in the career anxiety sub-dimension of concerns about vocational choice were higher than the mean scores of male adolescents. The education levels of the parents do not affect the career anxiety and adolescent-parent adjustment scores. It was determined that adolescents and their families mostly preferred the health sector in their career choices. The anxiety levels of those who chose a profession related to the health sector were lower than those who chose a profession related to the arts. The results revealed that adolescent-parent career compatibility affects career anxiety in adolescents, and career anxiety decreases when the career goals of the family and the adolescent are compatible.
