Evergreen Content in the Context of Sustainability of News Media in Turkey

Abstract

This study investigates the role of evergreen content in ensuring the sustainability of Turkish news media in a digitalizing media environment. Three newspapers with high digital readership rates in Türkiye (Hürriyet, Sabah, and Sözcü) were selected as samples, and the current content strategies and content types of these publications were examined through document analysis and descriptive analysis. The study reveals that evergreen content not only offers the potential to attract continuous traffic, but also plays a critical role in branding, creating areas of expertise, and increasing reader loyalty. The findings show that each newspaper has SEO practices for accessing evergreen content. Newspapers, benefiting from the advantages brought by digitalization, try to make repeated access to content possible by functioning as an accessible archive through search engines. This brings forth the necessity of preparing content in a way that it remains always usable. According to the findings, newspapers use evergreen content as an important access provider. This analysis offers important insights into the efforts of digital transformation and the search for sustainable business models within the Turkish media ecosystem.
